Overview
Equipping you to develop skills and knowledge to accommodate student diversity, this specialisation will prepare you to teach children and adolescents (5 – 18 years of age) in primary and secondary schools from Foundation to Year 12, in both regular and specialist settings. Through the development of specialist knowledge and skills which support the diverse learning needs of students in contemporary classrooms, you will learn to employ varied pedagogical approaches, to accommodate a range of student needs such as targeted educational provisions for students with complex learning needs, including those with significant disabilities. At the primary level, Foundation to Year 6, you will develop an understanding of how primary school aged children learn, including students with a disability, and how they can be catered for within regular learning contexts, across all primary curriculum areas. Consequently, you will enhance your personal knowledge of cross curriculum priorities and the curriculum areas you will teach such as: English and literacies, mathematics and numeracy, arts education, humanities and social education, science and health and physical education, especially with a focus on accommodating student diversity. You will select to complete extended studies in either English/literacy or mathematics/numeracy. Completion of this study sequence will enhance your expertise in these key curriculum areas. At the secondary level Year 7 to Year 12, you will qualify as a specialist teacher in one discipline area; your unit choices within your discipline studies sequence will determine in which area you become a specialist secondary teacher. You will develop an understanding of adolescent learning and development in a secondary education environment, especially for students with additional learning needs, including areas such as: curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation, curricular modification to accommodate student needs and education and its relationship to society.
