Overview
Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour. It is a broad scientific discipline that includes investigations of the brain, learning, memory, perception, reasoning, decision making, language, developmental and social processes, personality, and mental health and well-being. It is also concerned with the practical and ethical applications of psychological research to the profession.
The psychology extended major is research-led and based on the scientist-practitioner model of education whereby you will learn about professional practice within a scientific perspective. The extended major will also enable you to make informed choices about psychology-related careers.
The extended major is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as an approved Level 1 sequence of units. The extended major (APAC accredited Level 1 sequence of units) is required if you wish to specialise in psychology as it provides you with a pathway to further study in psychology (Level 2 sequence of units) and to the training required to practise as a Psychologist in Australia.
If you do not wish to become a registered Psychologist but have an interest in psychology, or if psychology complements your other studies, you may wish to complete a minor or major. The psychology minor and major are available in a broader range of Monash courses. Refer to the psychology minor and major information in the Handbook for more details.
