Overview

In the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences, you will learn to develop general knowledge and specific intellectual skills relating to human thought and relations, such as the way we communicate, intercultural relations, or how the past has affected the present. Social science analyses and explains societies and the relationships of individuals within those societies. The range of majors and minors available will allow you to explore new areas, further develop your strengths in arts, humanities and social sciences and pursue your interests and career objectives.

Studying the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences will encourage you to take an innovative approach in tackling world issues and foster a global perspective. It will provide you with the research skills, advanced discipline knowledge as well as the self-reliance to acquire information, assess evidence and convey complex ideas in speech and writing in order to answer complicated questions. You will be challenged to think critically and creatively, to resist easy answers or simplistic solutions and to develop an ethical and intellectual framework within which to understand what it means to be human, and how this changes over time.

As a graduate you will be work ready, equipped with the core skills employers in all sectors are looking for: written and verbal communication skills; how to work in a team, listen, solve problems and make decisions; leadership and negotiation skills; ways to build rapport and confidence; critical thinking skills; and research skills. Course structure

Rules
The course comprises 144 credit points, of which 96 credit points are arts and social science studies and 48 credit points are free electives.

To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences you must complete 144 credit points as specified in the course requirements, including:

• a maximum of 60 credit points at Level 1; and 
• a minimum of 36 credit points at Level 3, of which at least 24 credit points must be Arts units.

Note 1. Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.
Note 2. The level of the unit is indicated by the first number in the unit code.
Part A. Major studies48 credit points
You must complete one of the following majors including:
• a maximum of 12 credit points at Level 1; and
• a minimum of 18 credit points at Level 3.

Note 1. If you are completing the Psychology extended major (APAC accredited Level 1 sequence of units) you will be required to complete 60 credit points of Psychology units which will require replacing 12 credit points of elective units from either Part B or Part C. 
Note 2. If you intend to complete honours in your major area, you should check the required pre-requisites (e.g., specific units/credit points etc) to ensure you meet eligibility requirements.
Part B. Specified studies48 credit points
You must complete either Option 1 or Option 2:

Option 1:
• 48 credit points of a second Arts and Social Sciences major or extended major from Part A.

Option 2:
• 24 credit points of an Arts and Social Sciences minor from the list below, with with no more than 12 credit points at unit Level 1; and
• 24 credit points of any Arts and Social Sciences unit not already completed with a minimum of 6 credit points at Level 3.

Note: It is recommended that you complete a sequence of Level 1 units in more than one Arts major area in order to have options for finalising your choice of major.
Part C. Free elective studies48 credit points
You must complete 48 credit points of free elective study.

Elective units may be chosen from units available in the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences course including to extend your major or to complete a second major or minor(s) from the course. Note, a maximum of 12 credit points may be counted towards two majors or a major and a minor.

Elective units may also be taken from non-arts disciplines to broaden your knowledge or to complete a major or minor(s) from another course as long as you have the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolment in the units. The units may be at any level ensuring that the course rules are satisfied for the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences.

The level of the unit is indicated by the first number in the unit code; undergraduate units are those that commence with the numbers 1-3. You may need permission from the owning faculty to enrol in some units taught by other faculties.

The handbook's description of this structure

This course is structured in three parts: Part A. Major studies, Part B. Specified studies and Part C. Free elective studies.

Part A. Major studies

These units will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one arts and social sciences listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.

Part B. Specified studies

These units will expose you to several arts and social sciences areas of study contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It will also give you the opportunity to learn about several areas of study before finalising your choice of a major and a minor. You will complete sequences in at least two arts and social sciences areas, one leading to a minor and one leading to the major in Part A or second major in Part B. 

Part C. Free elective studies

These units will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or of arts, humanities and social sciences more broadly, through a second major or a minor or your own choice of units. Alternatively you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

All applicants must meet the University’s English requirements, as well as any other minimum entry requirements and listed course prerequisites. In cases where an applicant has completed studies higher than at secondary level, the applicant’s entire academic record can be taken into consideration in order to meet the Faculty’s entry requirements for the course.

Honours

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (A3701). You must have:

  • completed 48 credit points of studies within your chosen honours area of study;
  • obtained a minimum 75% (distinction) grade average in 24 credit points of studies in your chosen honours area of study at level 3; and
  • an overall WAM of 75 in your completed undergraduate degree.

For some disciplines, completion of specific units or their equivalent are required for admission to honours. The details are provided with the requirements for each discipline to which this applies.

Masters

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a master's course. You must have completed all the requirements for your undergraduate degree with a minimum 60% average.
