Overview

This double degree course gives you the opportunity to explore global cultures, learn the intricacies of global economies, develop your leadership skills and combine your studies with overseas travel.

Studying both commerce and global studies will enable you to explore from a multidisciplinary perspective how economic, political, social and technological decisions are made across the world.

You will learn about the challenges facing all cultures and communities, such as peace and conflict, the rich-poor gap, and crime and justice, and be able to combine these with an understanding of the commercial realities all countries face.

Course structure

Course requirements
In the Global studies component you must choose a minimum of 18 credit points points for study abroad from either the units listed under your chosen specialisation or at an overseas partner institution. You must complete no more than six level 1 arts units (36 credit points) and at least 36 credit points at level 3 of which at least 24 credit points must be arts units.

You must complete one elective unit (6 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics

Capstone, project, international or internship experience unit

You must complete 1 unit from one of the following lists, unless you are completing a major in Accounting. If you are completing the Accounting major you do not complete this section, but must take one elective from the Faculty of Business and Economics instead. Note: you may choose a 12 credit point unit by using the 6 credit points from the "Additional commerce unit" above. If you wish to choose a 24 credit point unit you must discuss course progression with the Faculty.

Part B. Commerce listed major

48 credit points
You must complete one major from the list below. Depending on the major chosen, you may have already studied one of the required units as part of your commerce specified study. If so, you must complete an additional commerce unit to bring the combined commerce study to at least 96 points from the Faculty of Business and Economics. If you are intending to undertake an honours year, you should ensure you complete the specific units required for honours in your chosen major area of study. Refer also to the table of majors and minors.

Commerce

B2001 Bachelor of Commerce is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete the following two parts::

Part A. Commerce specified study

This will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Commerce listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Global Studies

A2001 Bachelor of Global Studies course is a specialist course that develops through two themes, which will provide you with interdisciplinary approaches to addressing the key challenges facing the global community and in-depth expertise in your specialised area of study to enable you to effect change.

Part A. Leadership, culture and globalisation

You will compare and contrast a range of solutions in different historical, linguistic, cultural, and geographical settings, focussing especially on developing an understanding of effective leadership across a range of contexts to formulate practical and innovative approaches to global challenges.

Part B. Global studies specialist knowledge

These units will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific facet of global studies that comprises your specialisation, providing you with the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge needed to critically analyse, communicate and apply your disciplinary knowledge.

You must complete 192 points, of which 96 points are from the Bachelor of Commerce (including all the requirements in Part A and B for the single degree) and 96 points from the Bachelor of Global Studies (including all of the requirements in Part A and B for the single degree).

VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:

Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements.

Diploma of Business (Commerce stream) Part 2 average: 75%
Monash University Foundation Year average: 76.25%

Higher education studies:

Applicants will be require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

Monash Minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS: 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or TOEFL Paper-based test: 550 with a TWE of 4.5; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
