Overview

Commerce and information technology are inseparable in the modern world, and the need for more sophisticated technology is intense. People with the commercial skills to understand and implement technology are in high demand, and with these two degrees you will have these skills.

You could:

  • combine accounting and software development to create software programs for accountants
  • mix games development and marketing science to understand the demands of selling a video game franchise
  • pair business information systems with econometrics or actuarial science to develop expertise in the growing field of data analytics
  • learn how to commercialise information technology services and products.

Course structure

Rules
You will complete one major from Bachelor of Commerce and one major from Bachelor of Information Technology. Where you have space in your degree you may complete a second major with no more than two units contributing towards both of your chosen majors or towards both a major and the specialisation.

You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE), including the Research, Experimentation and Discovery, Monash Innovation Guarantee, Global Immersion Guarantee and Volunteering. These flagship rich educational experience units may be credited in place of your specified commerce elective if approved by the faculty, or alternatively utilising your replacement units. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.

If you are enrolled in a double degree it may be possible to use 6 credit points from each degree to do the Global Immersion Guarantee (12 credit points). For information on eligible double degree combinations please see Global Immersion Guarantee.
Commerce component96 credit points
You must complete 96 credit points, including all of the requirements in Parts A, Part B and Part C for the Bachelor of Commerce.

If you are completing the Accounting major as part of your double degree, please note ECX2953 is required for professional accreditation and can be completed in Part A instead of ECC1000, and you will not be required to complete ECC1100.
Information Technology component96 credit points
You must complete 96 credit points, including all of the requirements in Parts A and B, for the Bachelor of Information Technology.

No more than 36 credit points can be completed at Level 1.

If you choose to major in Business information systems then you are exempted from FIT1006 and must replace it with a FIT Level 3 elective.. This is because you will complete a Level 1 statistics unit in the Commerce side of your degree (ETC1000 or ETF1100).

Commerce

B2001 Bachelor of Commerce is a comprehensive course, structured in three parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Core studies

These studies will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Major studies

Your major studies will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Part C. Capstone studies

This is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the study of your course.


Information Technology

C2000 Bachelor of Information Technology is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Specified studies

This will provide you with foundation skills and knowledge for your information technology education and ensure a breadth of understanding of information technology and its applications in organisations and society.

Part B. Major studies

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one area of information technology. You will develop the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in your chosen major needed to successfully plan, develop, implement and evaluate information technology products and systems.

Course progression map

The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.

You must complete 192 credit points, of which 96 credit points are from the Bachelor of Commerce (including all the requirements in Parts A, B and C for the single degree) and 96 credit points from the Bachelor of Information Technology (including all the requirements in Parts A and B for the single degree).

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:
Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements.

Monash College entry requirements:
Diploma of Business (Commerce stream) Part 2 average: 70%
Monash University Foundation Year average: 76.25%

Higher education studies:
Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

English language

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
