Overview

Commerce and information technology are inseparable in the modern world, and the need for more sophisticated technology is intense. People with the commercial skills to understand and implement technology are in high demand, and with these two degrees you will have these skills.

You could:

  • combine accounting and software development to create software programs for accountants
  • mix games development and marketing science to understand the demands of selling a video game franchise
  • pair business information systems with econometrics or actuarial science to develop expertise in the growing field of data analytics
  • learn how to commercialise information technology services and products.

You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of flagship rich experiences, including the Monash Immersion Guarantee and Global Immersion Guarantee - Study Abroad (monash.edu). These flagship rich experience units may be credited in place of your additional commerce unit if approved by the faculty, or alternatively utilising your replacement units. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available. If you are enrolled in a double degree it may be possible to use 6 credit points from each degree to do the Global Immersion Guarantee (12 credit points). Commerce component96 credit points
You must complete 96 credit points, including all of the requirements in Part A and Part B, for the Bachelor of Commerce. Note: If you are completing the Accounting major as part of your double degree, please note ECX2953 is required for professional accreditation.
Information technology component96 credit points
You must complete 96 credit points, including all of the requirements in Part A and Part B, for the Bachelor of Information Technology.

If a unit is used for both IT specified study and a major, you need to complete additional units offered by the Faculty of IT to ensure a total of at least 96 credit points of information technology study (any unit starting with code FIT).

Commerce

B2001 Bachelor of Commerce is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Commerce specified study

This will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

Part B. Commerce listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Information technology

C2000 Bachelor of Information Technology is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

Part A. Information technology specified study

This will provide you with foundation skills and knowledge for your information technology education and ensure a breadth of understanding of information technology and its applications in organisations and society.

Part B. Information technology listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one area of information technology. You will develop the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in your chosen major needed to successfully plan, develop, implement and evaluate information technology products and systems.

You must complete 192 points, of which 96 points are from the Bachelor of Commerce (including all the requirements in Part A and B for the single degree) and 96 points from the Bachelor of Information Technology (including all the requirements in Part A and B for the single degree).

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:
Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements.

Monash College entry requirements:
Diploma of Business (Commerce stream) Part 2 average: 70%
Monash University Foundation Year average: 76.25%

Higher education studies:
Applicants will be require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

English language

Monash Minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
