Overview

This course is designed to provide you with the analytical, conceptual and quantitative skills for a wide range of careers in decision making, leadership and management, policy development, and problem solving in the professions, in addition to the corporate and public sectors.

Graduates of this course are highly valued for their training in quantitative skills and techniques which are well suited for employment in both Australia and overseas.

The course begins with an introduction to core commerce discipline principles, and then offers the choice and flexibility to study up to two majors in different commerce disciplines, as well as the opportunity to study overseas or undertake an internship.

Course rules
In choosing your units, you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 units (60 credit points) at level 1 and at least six units (36 credit points) at level 3, including four units (24 credit points) at level 3 offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Part A. Commerce specified study48 credit points

Core units

36 credit points
You must complete 36 credit points from the following units. You must complete BTC1110 or BTX1010. You must complete ETC1000 or ETX1100. You must complete MGC1010 or MGX1010.Only one accounting unit may be completed from ACC1100, ACX1100, ACC1200 or ACX1200. Note: If you intend to complete a major in Accounting or Actuarial Studies, you must complete ACC1100 or ACX1100. Note: If you are undertaking Bachelor of Law (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce course (L3005), BTC1110 / BTX1010 in Part A can be replaced with a Commerce elective.

Additional commerce unit

6 credit points
You must complete one elective unit (6 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics. You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of flagship rich experiences, including the Monash Immersion Guarantee and Global Immersion Guarantee - Study Abroad (monash.edu). These flagship rich experience units may be credited in place of your additional commerce unit if approved by the faculty, Monash Immersion Guarantee or alternatively utilising your free electives. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.

Capstone, project, international or internship experience unit

6 credit points
You must complete one unit from one of the following lists, unless you are completing a major in Accounting.

You must complete ACX3900 if you intend to complete a major in Accounting.

Note: If you choose a 12 or 24 credit point unit it will reduce the amount of points available for free electives in Part C which may impact on your ability to complete a major using electives.
Part B. Commerce listed major48 credit points
You must complete at least one major from the list below. Depending on the major chosen, you may have already studied one of the required units as part of your commerce specified study. If so, you must complete an additional commerce unit to bring the combined commerce study to at least 96 credit points from the Faculty of Business and Economics. If you are intending to undertake an honours year, you should ensure you complete the specific units required for honours in your chosen major area of study.
Part C. Free elective study48 credit points
Electives can be chosen from within the Bachelor of Commerce, including units to complete a second major or minor(s). Enrolment in Faculty of Business and Economics units at campuses other than the campus of enrolment is subject to there being capacity after students from that campus have enrolled. Elective units can also be chosen from across the University, including to complete a major or minor from another course, as long as you have the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units. You should also be aware of travel and timetabling limitations. No more than two units can contribute towards two majors, or a major and a minor, in the same course (including a double degree course). The same unit is not credited towards two minors. If you are in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards this Commerce degree.

This is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts:

Part A. Commerce specified study

This will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.

You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of flagship rich experiences, including the Monash Immersion Guarantee and Global Immersion Guarantee - Study Abroad (monash.edu). Part B. Commerce listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.

Part C. Free elective study

This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or commerce more broadly, through a second major or a minor. Alternatively, you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

Course progression map

You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B and C (144 points): including 96 points of study in Parts A and B, and 48 points of free electives in Part C.

In choosing your units, you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 units (60 points) at level 1 and at least six units (36 points) at level 3, including four units (24 points) at level 3 offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

  • ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics
  • ETC1000 Business and economic statistics / ETX1100 Business statistics
  • MGC1010/MGX1010 Introduction to management
  • MKC1200 Principles of marketing

* You must complete ACC1100/ACX1100 if you intend to complete a major in Accounting or Actuarial Studies.

** If you are undertaking Bachelor of Law (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce course (L3005), BTC1110 / BTX1010 in Part A can be replaced with a Commerce elective.

b. Part B. Commerce listed major (48 points)

You must complete at least one major from the list below. A major requires eight units with no more than two units (12 points) at level 1 and at least three units (18 points) at level 3.

Depending on the chosen major, you may have already studied one of the units as part of your commerce specified study. If so, you must complete an additional commerce unit to bring the combined commerce study to at least 96 points from the Faculty of Business and Economics.

If you are intending to undertake an honours year, you should ensure you complete the specific units required for honours in your chosen major area of study.

No more than two units can contribute towards two majors, or a major and a minor, in the same course (including a double degree course). The same unit is not credited towards two minors.

For students in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards this Commerce degree.

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:

Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements.

Higher education studies: 

Applicants will be require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

Monash Minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

To be eligible to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), you must obtain a distinction grade average (70%) or above in 24 credit points of studies in relevant discipline units at level 3.
