This course is designed to provide you with the analytical, conceptual and quantitative skills for a wide range of careers in decision making, leadership and management, policy development, and problem solving in the professions, in addition to the corporate and public sectors.
Graduates of this course are highly valued for their training in quantitative skills and techniques which are well suited for employment in both Australia and overseas.
The course begins with an introduction to core commerce discipline principles, and then offers the choice and flexibility to study up to two majors in different commerce disciplines, as well as the opportunity to study overseas or undertake an internship.

Part C. Free elective study48 credit points
Elective units can also be chosen from across the University, including to complete a major or minor from another course, as long as you have the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units. You should also be aware of travel and timetabling limitations.
If you are in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards this Commerce degree.
The handbook's description of this structure
This is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts:
Part A. Commerce specified study
This will provide you with a broad foundation for your study of commerce and expose you to several commerce disciplines. This will contribute breadth to your knowledge of commerce and address the graduate course outcomes. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more about each discipline before finalising your choice of major.
Part B. Commerce listed major
This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of your major area of study.
Part C. Free elective study
This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or commerce more broadly, through a second major or a minor. Alternatively, you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.
Course progression map
The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.
You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B and C (144 credit points): including 96 credit points of study in Parts A and B, and 48 points of free electives in Part C.
In choosing your units, you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 units (60 credit points) at level 1 and at least six units (36 credit points) at level 3, including four units (24 credit points) at level 3 offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise specified.
Part A. Commerce specified study (48 credit points)
You must complete:
a. The following 6 units (36 credit points):
- ACC1100 Introduction to financial accounting* or ACC1001 Accounting fundamentals
- BTC1110 Commercial law**
- ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics
- ETC1000 Business and economic statistics
- MGC1010 Introduction to management
- MKC1200 Principles of marketing
* You must complete ACC1100 if you intend to complete a major in Accounting or Actuarial Studies.
** If you are undertaking Bachelor of Law (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce course (L3005), BTC1110 in Part A can be replaced with a Commerce elective.
b. One elective unit (6 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics.
You can enrich your degree to hone your academic and professional skills with a range of Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE), including the Research, Experimentation and Discovery, Monash Innovation Guarantee and Global Immersion Guarantee. These flagship rich educational experience units may be credited in place of your additional commerce unit if approved by the faculty, or alternatively utilising your free electives. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.
c. One capstone, project, international or internship experience unit (minimum 6 credit points) chosen from the units listed below.
You must complete one unit from one of the following lists.

Part B. Commerce listed major (48 credit points)
You must complete at least one major from the list below. A major requires eight units with no more than two units (12 credit points) at level 1 and at least three units (18 credit points) at level 3.
Depending on the chosen major, you may have already studied one of the units as part of your commerce specified study. If so, you must complete an additional commerce unit to bring the combined commerce study to at least 96 credit points from the Faculty of Business and Economics.
If you are intending to undertake an honours year, you should ensure you complete the specific units required for honours in your chosen major area of study.

Part C. Free elective study (48 credit points)

Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not be sufficient to meet admission requirements.

Higher education studies:
Applicants will require a minimum 70% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

Progression to further studies
Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to the one year honours program Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) (B3701). To be eligible to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) (B3701), you must obtain a distinction grade average (70%) or above in 24 credit points of studies in relevant discipline units at Level 3. In addition, some majors require particular units to be taken for admission to honours. The details are provided with the requirements for each major to which this applies.
