The Master of Project Management is a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary graduate degree that integrates the knowledge required to manage major projects and programs across multiple sectors. With demand for skilled project managers at an all-time high, you can expand and deepen your knowledge and practice skills to launch or advance your career in this dynamic field. With full and part-time options, together with flexible delivery, you can also fit study around your busy work and family commitments.
The course is structured in three parts – Project management essentials knowledge; Project management advanced theory and practice; and Project management application studies. You’ll learn how to critically analyse project environments from managing people and stakeholders to communications, culture and politics, as well as identify adaptive approaches to complex problems and use innovative practices to deliver successful project outcomes.
You will have the opportunity to work on real-life projects where theory and practice are applied to problems situated in local and international, corporate, government and social contexts. As a Master of Project Management graduate, you’ll be strongly placed to provide strategic project leadership in a wide range of settings, such as business delivery, IT developments and engineering solutions across the corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors.

The handbook's description of this structure
This course is structured in three parts: Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge, Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice and Part C. Project Management application studies.
Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge
In these studies, you will develop an understanding of the principles and techniques of delivering projects using different methods, processes and knowledge frameworks. You will explore the techniques to manage the project context, including people, stakeholders, communications, culture, and politics.
These studies will also introduce you to project management studies at advanced graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field, and build on existing professional work experience.
Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice
In these studies you will develop specialist expertise in organising the project function to deliver value through your ability to manage complex projects and knowledge. These studies will introduce you to advanced graduate level concepts in project management within allied disciplines. In this part you will also develop specialist expertise to critically analyse complex problems and to identify adaptive approaches so agreed project outcomes are delivered across multiple boundaries, utilising innovative project practices.
Part C. Project Management application studies
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B, and Part C
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part B and Part C
- If you are admitted at entry level 3 you complete 24 credit points, comprising Part C.
Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

The course comprises 72 credit points structured in three parts: Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge (24 credit points), Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice (24 credit points) and Part C. Project Management application studies (24 credit points).
Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.
Part A. Project management essentials knowledge (24 credit points)
You must complete the following four units (24 credit points)

- OPO5902 The planning approach to project management
- OPO5903 The learning approach to project management
Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice (24 credit points)
You must complete the following four units (24 credit points)

- OPO5001 The project as a social system
- OPO5002 Project management for organisational innovation
- OPO5003 Managing project knowledge
Part C. Project Management application studies (24 credit points)
You must complete the following three units (18 credit points):
- LEO5113 Industry challenge
- LEO5114 Global challenge
- MGO5992 Professional development
And
You must complete one elective unit (6 credit points) from Monash online programs

Entry requirements
English language
Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
