Participants build a strong base for decision making in relation to their practice and establish themselves as future educational leaders in a global workforce. You will build a high level of expertise in one of two specialisations:
- Primary education
- Secondary education
The course will prepare you for teaching in an increasingly diverse, complex and changing world. You will engage with contemporary ideas and practices and learn how to foster the learning of children and young people with varied needs. This will enable you to develop your students’ creative, intellectual, physical, personal and social capabilities.
While learning to navigate the complex nature of teaching, you will develop the specific professional knowledge and teaching skills needed to engage students of various ages and developmental stages with particular school subjects. Depending upon your specialisation, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to teach in learning areas such as the arts and music, English, mathematics, humanities, physical education, health and wellbeing, science, and digital technologies. Professional experience offered throughout the course in urban, rural, remote or international locations and education settings, will build your knowledge of teaching and learning. As a result, you will become a thoughtful, effective and inclusive educator, able to design learning experiences that ensure that your future students have the right balance of challenge and support.
The Bachelor of Education (Honours) prepares you for the global workforce. You will have a strong foundation for decision making about your practice and you will be in a position to establish yourself as an educational leader of the future.
The course is available for either primary or secondary school teaching. Secondary education students will prepare as specialist science or mathematics teachers, while primary education students will be prepared to teach across the school curriculum with specialist expertise in either, English and literacy, or mathematics and numeracy, as well as with highly valued specialist expertise in science-related areas. In each case, you might also turn your skills to broader science education contexts such as science communication, museums and publishing.
This double degree course offers you a high quality education in science and the possibility of a career in science or science education to inspire and engage young developing minds.

The handbook's description of this structure
Double degree courses include the features of the component degree courses, except that electives may be reduced.
Education
The course develops through the five themes of Part A. Core studies, Part B. Education studies, Part C. Curriculum studies, Part D. Discipline studies and Part E. Professional experience. The nature and proportion of units required among these themes will differ depending upon your specialisation and discipline studies. In this double degree you will complete:
Part A. Core studies
These studies include essential units that are part of every Bachelor of Education (Honours) specialisation. These units are designed to ground you in evidence-based practices, preparing you to navigate diverse classroom environments and enhance student learning effectively. A key focus of this theme is developing your knowledge and skills to choose strategies that support students to learn, retain, and apply knowledge effectively.
You will explore effective teaching practices, such as sequencing for learning, modelling expected outcomes, assessing and reporting student progress, and providing constructive feedback to support student growth. Classroom management is another major component where you will learn to create structured, supportive environments using clear rules, routines, and high expectations. You will also develop skills to build positive relationships with students, engaging them actively in their learning journey. Inclusivity is embedded throughout the units and you will gain foundational knowledge of First Nations cultures and perspectives, along with other enabling factors that promote cultural responsiveness and support for diverse learners. These units will equip you to become an adaptable, culturally aware, and skilled teacher, ready to apply evidence-based practices for impactful and inclusive teaching and learning.
Part B. Education studies
These units cover essential aspects of learning to teach and are tailored to each specialisation to prepare you appropriately to enter the profession in your chosen sector (primary or secondary). These studies include an examination of the learning and teaching relationship, child and/or adolescent development, alongside classroom culture and practice. You will build your professional skills, knowledge and understanding of teaching through a process of personal inquiry into effective teaching practices, informed by current research. These units will challenge you to consider global and local influences on education as well as the effective and innovative incorporation of emerging technologies to ensure the relevance of your teaching. You will build a deep understanding of learners, families, schools and communities. Societal trends are explored as well as how to effectively engage local communities, parents and carers.
Part C. Curriculum studies
With a focus on the Victorian Curriculum, these units will provide you with the content-specific knowledge pedagogies, covering Foundation–10 curriculum, as well as specific pedagogy appropriate for teaching VCE in a particular discipline or disciplines. You will develop the understanding and skills needed to become a skilled and effective educator who is able to draw on a repertoire of strategies to suit particular students, educational contexts and learning outcomes. You will learn how to design, plan and implement engaging learning experiences to meet diverse learners' needs. You will develop your knowledge and skills in key learning areas relevant to the educational level of your specialisation, deepening your understanding of teaching and learning, assessment strategies, theories and practices related to the subjects you will be teaching.
If you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Education double degree course, you will be prepared to teach in two secondary teaching areas. You will also be required to successfully complete a unit that develops skills in teaching literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, ensuring you have the skills and expertise to share in the responsibility of educating literate and numerate learners.
Part D. Discipline studies
These studies are designed to develop your content knowledge in the key learning areas that you will be teaching in schools or other education settings. These units are offered as integrated curriculum/discipline studies in the primary specialisation, and as a standalone discipline studies sequence in the secondary specialisation; these units will provide you with a focused sequence of study that will deepen and advance your knowledge in your teaching specialist areas. The number of units completed in this sequence is unique to each specialisation and accordingly aligns and reflects the different needs of the primary and secondary school sectors.
Part E. Professional experience
Integral to the course, the professional experience opportunities have been designed as a developmental learning sequence that you will engage with at every stage of your course. This component is an opportunity for you to build connections between the core, education, curriculum and discipline themed unit content and apply these in a professional context. You will operate within a particular social and legislative environment unique to your placement setting, and interact with sector professionals as you work collaboratively with them whilst on placement. An opportunity to further explore these professional elements is facilitated through the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) unit.
Science
S2000 Bachelor of Science is a comprehensive course and it will provide you with a broad, general science education, as well as specialist training in one or more science disciplines. This course is structured in three equal parts. In this double degree course you will complete:
Part A. Science specified study
This will provide you with the mathematical or statistical foundation for your study of science and address the nature of science and its communication. It will also expose you to different science disciplines contributing breadth to your understanding of science and giving you the opportunity to learn about several disciplines before finalising your choice of major.
Part B. Science listed major
This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will learn to develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the discipline.
The course progression maps provide guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study.
Please refer to this guide when choosing the appropriate level one mathematics and statistics unit.
You must complete 204 points, of which 108 points are from the Bachelor of Education (Honours) and 96 points are from the Bachelor of Science.
The 108 points from the Bachelor of Education (Honours) must include all of the requirements in Part A, B, C, D and E and any special course requirements.
The 96 points from the Bachelor of Science will include all of the requirements in Part A and B as described in the Bachelor of Science degree.
You must ensure that you complete six science listed units (36 credit points) at level 1 and ten science listed units (60 credit points) at levels 2 and 3 with a minimum of four (24 credit points) at level 3. In selecting your science studies, you must take note of the specialisms required for teaching. Students in the Secondary Education specialisation must qualify for two separate specialist teaching areas. You must complete the mathematics and statistics unit requirement within the first 72 credit points of this double degree course.
Please note that there are no extended majors available in this double degree.
