You will develop advanced knowledge and skills in teaching children and adolescents (5–18 years of age) from Foundation to Year 12. You will engage with contemporary theories and practices of primary and secondary education, developing inclusive practices that respond to children’s and adolescents' diverse needs, while building a repertoire of strategies to foster learning in classroom settings.

All the key elements of the primary curriculum including English and literacies, mathematics and numeracy, arts, humanities, digital technologies, science, and health and physical education are included. Your expertise within the key primary curriculum areas of English/literacy and mathematics/numeracy will be enhanced by completing extended studies in these areas.

Additionally, you will develop effective strategies for assessing children's development within specific learning areas and will learn to design engaging experiences that ensure students’ ongoing learning progress.

At the secondary level, Year 7 to Year 12, you will develop specialist expertise in curriculum planning, assessment and pedagogy up to VCE-equivalent level and you will qualify as a specialist teacher in one discipline area; your major study sequence from your undergraduate studies will determine your specialist area as a secondary teacher.

You will learn evidence-informed teaching approaches aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and Core Content, preparing you to design clear, inclusive and effective learning experiences.

The course will develop your capacity to apply evidence-based teaching strategies. You will also learn how to establish and maintain safe and positive classroom environments, work effectively with families and communities, and uphold the ethical and professional standards expected of teachers.

Professional experience is embedded throughout the course, starting in your first semester and culminating in an extended supervised teaching experience in your final semester. Across 60 days of supervised professional experience in metropolitan, rural, remote or international settings, you will connect theory with practice and develop the professional capabilities needed to teach effectively within primary and secondary schools.

The Master of Teaching Primary and Secondary Education will prepare you as a professional, effective educator for the global workforce. As a graduate of the course, you will develop strong professional judgement to guide decision-making in your educational practice, enabling you to establish yourself as an effective, innovative, and inclusive educator, as well as a future leader in the profession.
