The Master of Teaching Secondary Education will prepare you for a rewarding career as a teacher in secondary schools. This course is designed for those with an undergraduate degree in any relevant discipline who wish to gain a secondary teaching qualification.

You will develop advanced knowledge and skills in teaching adolescents (12 -18 years of age) from Year 7 to Year 12 in two teaching areas. You will engage with contemporary theories and practices of secondary education. You will develop inclusive practices to meet a diverse range of adolescents' cognitive, social and emotional needs, while building a repertoire of strategies to foster learning in classroom settings.

You will develop specialist expertise in curriculum, assessment and pedagogy up to VCE-equivalent level, and you will qualify as a specialist teacher in two discipline areas; your major and minor study sequence from your undergraduate studies will determine your specialist areas as a secondary teacher. You will also receive a strong foundation in the teaching of literacy and numeracy and an understanding of how emerging and innovative digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, can be integrated purposefully and critically within the contemporary secondary classroom.

You will learn evidence-informed teaching approaches aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and Core Content, preparing you to design clear, inclusive and effective learning experiences.

The course will develop your capacity to understand how adolescents learn and your capacity to apply evidence-based teaching strategies.You will also learn how to establish and maintain safe and positive classroom environments, work effectively with families and communities, and uphold the ethical and professional standards expected of teachers.   

Professional experience is embedded throughout the course, starting in your first semester and culminating in an extended supervised teaching experience in your final semester. Across 60 days of supervised professional experience in metropolitan, rural, remote or international settings, you will connect theory with practice and develop the professional capabilities needed to teach effectively within secondary schools. 

The Master of Teaching Secondary Education will prepare you as a professional, effective educator for the global workforce. As a graduate of the course, you will develop strong professional judgement to guide decision-making in your educational practice, enabling you to establish yourself as an effective, innovative, and inclusive educator, as well as a future leader in the profession.
