This course is designed for aspiring and practising leaders across educational settings. The range of unit offerings will enhance your capacity to act critically, creatively, and innovatively to address the challenges posed in an increasingly complex, diverse, and technologically rich world. You will develop the professional knowledge and skills required to lead in a globalised world and to think beyond borders in order to make a difference. You will explore and understand educational leadership from diverse contexts and will have the opportunity to apply this through a research based capstone experience. You will become a leader that seeks to develop yourself and others to reach their full potential. This course offers the opportunity to expand your learning into a higher degree by research.

The course is structured in three parts: Part A. Orientation, Part B. Key constructs in leadership, and Part C. Professional inquiry. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A, and for some units from Parts B and/or C.
Part A. Orientation
These studies will introduce you to contemporary issues in the study of education. They are intended for students who come into the course without previous qualifications in education or work experience in education-related fields. You will engage with academic traditions and scholarly practices in the field of education at the postgraduate level, become acquainted with a broad range of debates across education contexts and develop an understanding of the complexities in the field.
Part B. Key constructs in leadership
You will consider educational leadership for a changing world. Various constructs of leadership will be considered including traditional and emergent leadership theories, cultural manifestations of leadership, the role of social justice in educational settings, and persistent challenges facing leaders. You will gain an understanding of how leadership interacts with and responds to the dynamics of policy, politics, and power in differing contexts and how this shapes education and learning. You will expand on your learning through selecting units tailored to your interests. You will enhance your capacity to think and act critically, creatively, and innovatively by exploring cutting-edge issues and research crucial to future leaders in education. Additionally, you will immerse yourself in a project tailored to your specific interests, which will deepen and enhance your learning.
Part C. Professional inquiry
The focus of these studies is professional inquiry. As such you will have an opportunity to engage in research or extended leadership studies, which will broaden your understanding of, and ability to critically inquire into leadership.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 72 points, comprising Part B and Part C
- If you are admitted at entry level 3 you complete 48 points, comprising Part B.
Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

Part C. Professional inquiry (24 points)

Option 1 - You must complete 24 points selected from the following:

Option 2 - Pathway to graduate research
A pathway to graduate research (e.g. master's by research, PhD) is available if you achieve a weighted average mark of at least 75 per cent in the units of this course. On-campus attendance is required for this pathway. This is not available at the point of entry, however if you are commencing at entry level 1 or 2 and interested in this possibility you must make space to pursue the two required units in Part C. If you are commencing at entry level 3 (48 points) and are interested in the pathway to graduate research you must achieve a 75 per cent average in your first 24 points of study to be eligible.

- EDF5614 Research project in education

English language
Monash minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Progression to further studies
Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a graduate research degree if you are invited to complete EDF5613 Research approaches in education and EDF5614 Research project in education and you meet the following requirements:
- achieve a weighted average mark of at least 70 per cent and a minimum mark of 70 per cent in EDF5613 and EDF5614 may apply for admission to 0079 Doctor of Philosophy.
- achieve a weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent and a minimum mark of 65 per cent in EDF5613 and EDF5614 may apply for admission to 3204 Master of Education and may receive up to 24 points of credit towards the coursework requirement.
