Overview

The course equips registered health care practitioners with the knowledge and skills to progress into advanced health care practice roles.  It is designed to enable you to graduate with a degree in your specialisation; Master of Advanced Medical Imaging Practice, Master of Advanced Occupational Therapy Practice, Master of Advanced Paediatric Physiotherapy Practice, Master of Advanced Primary Health Care Practice, Master of Advanced Radiation Therapy Practice, or Master of Advanced Paramedic Practice. 

As you will read in Requirements below, depending on your specialisation you can choose either a coursework pathway or a combination of coursework and a research project to achieve your professional ambitions.

Course structure

Part A. Foundations for advanced health care practice24 credit points
You must complete one of the specialisations listed below.

NOTES:
- Some of the units listed within the specialisations may require on-campus participation. Please check the mode of offering in the unit’s handbook entry to ensure that it suits your preferred study mode. For example, units offered ‘on-campus’, ‘block-on’ or ‘flexible’ will have on-campus requirements, so they are not suitable for students wishing to study fully online.

Radiation therapy

24 credit points
You must complete at least 12 credit points from the following:

You must complete either the Research stream or Coursework stream as detailed below.
Notes:
If you are enrolled in the Paramedicine specialisation you must complete the research stream option 1 minor thesis only. Option 2 research project is not available. The coursework stream is not available.
If you are enrolled in the Occupational therapy specialisation, you may choose either the coursework stream OR option 2 of the research stream. Research option 1 minor thesis is not available.

Paediatric physiotherapy

Radiation therapy

48 credit points
You must complete MAP5003 and RTP5102, plus 24 credit points from any of the following units (or available units from FMNHS as negotiated with the course coordinator):

RTP5106 is only available to students who are MRPBA registered and practising as a Radiation Therapist in Australia.

The handbook's description of this structure

The course is structured in two parts: Part A. Foundations for advanced health care practice and Part B. Advanced specialist study. 

Part A. Foundations for advanced health care practice
In this part you will have the opportunity to complete scholarly practical studies that develop and expand your expertise within your area of specialist practice.

Part B. Advanced specialist study
This study will provide you with specialist professional knowledge and advanced skills in research or advanced professional practice in your chosen specialisation. Specialisations offer the choice of either a coursework focus or a research focus. The research focus provides a pathway to a higher degree by research.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A and Part B.*
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part B.
Notes:
  • If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.
  • *Entry level 1 is not available for the Radiation therapy specialisation.

  • If you are enrolled in the Paramedicine specialisation the coursework stream is not available. You must complete the research stream option 1 minor thesis only. Option 2 research project is not available.
  • If you are enrolled in the Occupational therapy specialisation, you may choose either the coursework stream, or the research stream option 2 research project. Option 1 minor thesis is not available.

Monash Level A, that is:  IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Progression to further studies

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a graduate research degree for students admitted at entry levels 1 and 2 completing the research stream in Part B.

Notes for students

  • All specialisations are taught online.
  • The Paramedicine specialisation is available both online and on-campus.
    • International students who are holders of an Australian student visa can only complete this specialisation in an on-campus mode. Teaching will take place at our Notting Hill teaching facility on Ferntree Gully Road, adjacent to the Clayton campus.
