Overview

The Master of Health Professions Education qualifies you to apply principles and theories that inform educational practice in a range of clinical and other relevant contexts to undertake professional and highly skilled work and as educators in the health professions. This practice-based qualification builds on the existing Graduate Certificate of Health Professions Education. It is suitable for a broad range of health professionals who are, or will be, engaged in the teaching, assessment, evaluation, curriculum design, mentoring and supervision of health professionals in a range of clinical and other contexts. You have the option of taking an education practice or a research practice capstone. The research capstone can articulate to a PhD.

Course structure

Part A. Core studies24 credit points
You must complete the following units:
- HPE5100 Foundations of health professions education (12 credit points)
- MPD0020 Assessment in health professions education micro-credential (6 credit points)
- Part C. Specified elective studies or micro-credential unit (6 credit points)
Part B. Applied studies24 credit points
You must complete the Coursework pathway or Research pathway

Coursework pathway

24 credit points
You must complete the following units:
-HPE5200 Health professions and simulation education in practice (12 credit points)
-Part C. Specified elective studies and/or micro-credential units (12 credit points)

Note: HPE5200 which must be completed after the Specified electives studies units.

Research pathway

24 credit points
You must complete the following units:
-MAP5010 Advanced health practice research project (12 credit points)
-Introduction to education research in the health professions and sciences micro-credential (12 credit points)

Note: Your choice of project must be aligned and approved by the Course Director prior to commencement of both Introduction to Education Research in the Health Professions and Sciences micro credential and MAP5010.
Part C. Specified elective studies24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points from any of the following units and list of micro-credentials not already completed in Part A and B.

Note: You can only complete either MAP5200 Improving Indigenous equity in professional practice or Sustainable healthcare in practice micro credential.

The handbook's description of this structure

This course is structured into three parts: Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies, and Part C. Specified elective studies. Each part comprises a combination of units and micro-credentials.

Part A. Core studies

This study will provide you with professional teaching and advanced supervisory skills in both clinical and non-clinical environments. It will facilitate the application of principles and theories that inform educational practice and allow for specialism through the choice of elective studies.

Part B. Applied studies

You have the opportunity to choose one of the following pathways:

a) Coursework pathway – in this pathway you will undertake a core capstone unit and combine it with elective units to suit your career interests. In the capstone unit you will have the option of focusing on education practice or research practice and will be required to integrate, extend and apply knowledge and skills gained in the course to professional practice development.

b) Research pathway – in this pathway you will undertake research in a health professions sciences unit and complete a research project. You will be required to demonstrate your ability to integrate and apply theories, principles and practice to a specific health professions education scenario or issue. Your choice of project must be aligned and approved by the Course Director prior to commencement of both Introduction to Education Research in the Health Professions and Sciences and MAP5010.

Part C. Specified elective studies

In this study, you will have the opportunity to expand your key areas of interest through completion of electives that will develop skills and knowledge in health professions education. Electives comprise micro-credentials and approved units.

  • You will receive specified credit for micro-credentials that you completed successfully prior to your enrolment in this course.
  • Not all micro-credentials are available every semester.
  • The “Assessment in Health Professions Education” micro-credential is a compulsory requirement for course completion.
  • The above micro-credentials are not eligible for FEE-HELP.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part A and Part B.

Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level C, that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 6.5); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 58; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 94 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 24, Listening: 20, Reading: 19 and Speaking: 20; or Equivalent approved English test
