Overview

In the Master of Sustainability you will build essential knowledge and practical skills for local, regional and international careers in sustainability practice across government and corporate sectors. The course will provide you with foundational knowledge of key sustainability challenges including deforestation, biodiversity loss, climate change, urban sustainability, and the circular economy, and will equip you with the ability to navigate these locally, regionally and globally. The course will also build your capacity to respond to these challenges using interdisciplinary approaches to measure, analyse, and act innovatively to promote positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) outcomes. The course will expand your worldviews and skill sets through a transformative student learning approach. You will be provided with opportunities to gain relevant hands-on experience through application and learning through real-world case studies, situations and scenarios. As a graduate from diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds you will be equipped for roles across sectors and levels to influence change toward sustainable practice in Indonesian and broader contexts.

The course comprises 72 credit points structured into three parts: Part A Foundation Studies (24 credit points), Part B: Discipline studies (24 credit points), Part C: Application studies (24 credit points).

Part A: Foundation studies

These studies build essential understanding of grand sustainability challenges, debates, management strategies and solution frameworks, situated in local and global contexts.

Part B: Discipline studies

These studies introduce current, industry-ready theories and tools necessary to explore, analyse and design practical solutions in a range of professional sustainability contexts.

Part C: Application studies

These studies extend knowledge and skills into new practice fields by undertaking impact-oriented projects and extension electives.

The course comprises 72 credit point structured into three parts: Part A: Foundation Studies (24 credit points), Part B: Discipline studies (24 credit points), Part C: Application studies (24 credit points)

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

 

Part A: Foundation studies (24 credit points)

You must complete the following units:

  • MSI5120 Perspectives on environment, society and governance 
  • MSI5121 Sustainability perspectives in practice 
  • MSI5220 Global sustainability challenges 
  • MSI5221 Sustainability challenges in Indonesia and the region 

Part B: Discipline studies (24 credit points)

You must complete the following units:

  • ATI5122 Corporate sustainability management  
  • ATI5434 Sustainability measurement
  • MSI5510 Innovation to influence system change 
  • MSI5520 Understanding human behaviour to influence system change 

Part C: Application studies (24 credit points)

You must complete 24 credit points from the following list of units:

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

Monash minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
