PREREQUISITE: Enrolment in the Bachelor of Applied Data Science Advanced (Honours) and completion of 144 credit points of study
Overview
In this unit, you will be introduced to important principles for undertaking research in the field of Data Science. The skills developed and knowledge acquired from this unit will prepare you to conduct and communicate your own research, as well as to be knowledgeable and critical interpreters of research more generally.
You will be introduced to the principles of research design, research ethics, and research methods and techniques of data collection and analysis appropriate to Data Science research generally. These skills will then be applied to the development, and written and oral communication of a research proposal.

Learning outcomes

The weekly workload requirements will be:
- Two hours of attendance at weekly workshops.
- Approximately 10 hours per week of independent study.
This unit aims to introduce research methods in Data Science to advanced students in preparation for the research project that they will complete in the second semester of the Honours year.
You will attend workshops where you will be introduced to research methods and critical analysis of literature. You will then apply this knowledge through regular critical reviews and informal presentations on important papers in the scientific literature (LO1-LO5). The final assessment will consist of a written research proposal and presentation by each student (LO1-LO4, LO6).
