Overview

This unit explores evolving theory, research and practice in understanding audiences. Drawing on case studies and scholarly research from around the world, it critically analyses audiences’ changing communication practices, consumption and engagement dynamics in a digital environment. Students examine and apply the diverse quantitative and qualitative research methods that are available to acquire a deeper understanding of audience needs, interests and preferences. Drawing on these research methods, students learn to critically evaluate the effectiveness of different communication strategies and practices in engaging, persuading and mobilising their desired audiences or publics in purposeful ways, as well as the ethical concerns that these practices may raise.
