Overview
The aim of the unit is to familiarize its participants with the challenges a translator faces when translating in the digital age, including textual multimodality, participatory media culture, digital and technological literacy, and ethics. Throughout the unit, the participants shall discuss how these challenges affect the translator’s work and the impact of newly emerging online translation practices on the status quo of professional translators. The unit covers various types of translation practices in the digital age, such as translating and post-editing assisted by computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, audiovisual translation, translating illustrated texts, online crowdsourcing translation, translating in social media and translation in global news agencies. The focus on the international, digital and technological framework will provide essential introductory knowledge about the main translation trends in the digital age, help students develop skills in multimodal translation, enhance their professional translation competence, raise their awareness and sensitivities to ethics, as well as develop their vocational and transferable skills required in the translation industry in a digitally ubiquitous world. Some of the seminars may be taught by guest lecturers.
