Overview
The unit introduces students to language and digital discourse, with a focus on Englishes in multilingual online contexts. Core topics explored include digital literacies, varieties of English online, identity construction online, digital discourse in offline public spaces, language policy, globalisation, multimodality, and the relationship between online and offline spaces. In doing so, the unit encourages students to critically reflect on their use of language on the Internet and social media, and on the social meaning and relevance of their online practices for the way they interact and engage with the world. The unit thereby facilitates the development of new media literacy and competency as well as skills and strategies for successful professional and personal communication in their future careers.
