Overview

This unit introduces foundation systems and design principles with reference to the geological context of a project. It also addresses how to determine relevant foundation design parameters from field and laboratory tests. It teaches the detailed design of shallow foundations (isolated footing, raft foundation) for simple and complex ground and load conditions. Finally, the design of single and group pile foundations in soils and rocks subjected to axial and lateral loads are taught including an introduction to pile integrity and load tests.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Assess geotechnical investigation carried out for a civil infrastructure development project.

  2. 2

Generate geological models for a development site based on the geotechnical investigation data.

  3. 3

Predict design parameters for materials of interest from the geotechnical investigation results and existing correlations.

  4. 4

Design shallow foundations on complex ground profiles using site specific material properties and satisfying limit states requirements.

  5. 5

Design pile foundations for complex loads and ground conditions based on limit state and serviceability requirements.

  6. 6

Generate quality reports for geotechnical investigation and design outputs.

Workload and teaching

  • Workshops24 hours
  • Teaching approachProblem-based learning
  • Teaching approachOnline learning
  • Teaching approachActive learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

An industry-sponsored investigation and design project will be used to teach fundamental design and analysis methods with opportunities to solve relatively simple and complex problems in the lecture and practice sessions.

2 hours equivalent of pre-recorded lecture materials each week on concepts, design methods and applications.

3 hours of workshop on concepts, applied design methods and hands-on problem-solving.
