Overview

This unit provides an overview of water and wastewater systems in urban environments. The overview focuses on these systems' functions regarding the provision of drinking water and wastewater treatment and their modes of operation. Specific topics include water supply, water use and consumption, drinking water treatment and distribution, wastewater characterisation and secondary treatment, sludge handling, resource recovery and nature-based solutions for wastewater treatment. Treatment process theory and design are covered in this unit for both drinking water and wastewater treatment systems.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Discern components of the water treatment chain and explain the chemical processes for water hardness removal.

  2. 2

Design the various components of active and passive wastewater treatment plants.

  3. 3

Determine potential quantities of recycled wastewater and recovered biosolids based on designs of secondary wastewater treatment plant.

  4. 4

Discern the components of advanced secondary wastewater treatment and energy recovery processes and explain the biological processes for the anaerobic treatment of sludge.

  5. 5

Decide between various wastewater treatment systems for differing problems given space, economic, and environmental constraints.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

Learning in the unit is mainly through lectures, practice classes and online learning. Online learning resources are recorded and are available in advance of each class. Students are expected to have reviewed those online materials along with other resources on Moodle before coming to class. During the lectures, students will have an opportunity to ask questions related to the online recording resources if concepts need clarification.
