Requisites

Overview

In this unit, you will explore a range of cardiovascular diseases and their relevance to perfusion practice. You will study structural and functional heart conditions as well as systemic pathologies which can impact clinical practice.
You will consider how these conditions and their associated pathophysiology influences cardiopulmonary bypass planning and patient outcomes. You will also examine complex scenarios involving shock states and multi-organ dysfunction, with a focus on their implications for perfusion strategy.
Through case-based learning, you will integrate knowledge from this unit with advanced clinical decision-making, building toward confident participation in high-acuity patient care.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Distinguish healthy versus pathological anatomy and physiology of cardiovascular and other related systems to inform clinical practice in cardiac surgical patients.

  2. 2

Justify appropriate clinical bypass strategies for a range of common cardiac disease pathologies to support clinical practice

  3. 3

Interpret cardiac disease pathologies from clinical investigations to prepare for a bypass case

  4. 4

Anticipate the expected clinical management challenges associated with cardiovascular diseases to identify strategies for optimisation of cardiopulmonary bypass

  5. 5

Evaluate current literature to inform an evidence-based approach to clinical practice

  6. 6

Communicate complex concepts and scientific content in a variety of formats
