Requisites

Overview

In this unit, you will develop an in-depth understanding of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, together with the structure and function of other body systems relevant to perfusion practice, including the respiratory, nervous and renal systems. You will examine how cardiopulmonary bypass affects normal anatomy, physiology, and organ system interactions, and how these changes influence perfusion management.

The unit will also explore anatomical and physiological variation, requiring you to consider how perfusion strategies may need to be adapted for different clinical contexts. Throughout the unit, you will apply an evidence-based approach to practice, strengthen your interpretation of clinical investigations, and further develop your ability to communicate complex scientific and clinical information effectively within the multidisciplinary environment.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Examine a range of anatomical structures and body systems to describe how they are affected by cardiopulmonary bypass.

  2. 2

Evaluate how variations in human anatomy and body systems affect perfusion requirements and cardiopulmonary bypass management.

  3. 3

Apply scientific formulae to the practice of perfusion to address complex perfusion and health related issues across diverse patient populations and clinical contexts.

  4. 4

Source, integrate and evaluate scientific literature to determine the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass on human body systems.

  5. 5

Analyse clinical investigations to inform perioperative perfusion and multidisciplinary team strategies.

  6. 6

Communicate, in various formats, complex concepts and relevant scientific content to support collaborative multidisciplinary practice and effective team-based care.
