Overview
In this unit, you will develop an understanding of the biomedical and bioelectronic principles that underpin perfusion equipment, patient monitoring systems, and safety devices used in contemporary perfusion practice. You will examine how these principles are applied in the cardiothoracic operating theatre to support safe and effective cardiopulmonary bypass. Particular emphasis is placed on the underlying principles, monitoring, and safe use of perfusion hardware and associated clinical technologies, with reference to the ANZCP Standards and Guidelines.
Throughout the unit, you will explore technical issues and equipment malfunctions that may arise in practice and develop structured troubleshooting and problem-solving approaches to manage these safely. You will also examine how monitoring systems, alarms, and safety devices contribute to risk reduction and support clinical decision-making during bypass. By the end of the unit, you will be able to apply biomedical electronics concepts to perfusion scenarios, justify the use of monitoring and safety technologies, and communicate these principles clearly in relation to safe patient care.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Examine the principles and safety standards of biomedical devices relevant to clinical perfusion to safely provide perfusion.
- 2
Analyse a variety of perfusion equipment and monitoring devices to justify the selection of appropriate technology for the clinical management patients.
- 3
Apply critical problem solving knowledge and skills to support patient safety in complex clinical practice settings.
- 4
Examine the technical issues expected from cardiac biomedical equipment to develop problem solving strategies for when equipment malfunctions.
- 5
Evaluate and justify the use of safety devices in mitigating risk during cardiopulmonary bypass, in accordance with ANZCP Standards and Guidelines and current literature.
- 6
Communicate the core biomedical principles that underpin perfusion equipment and monitoring systems to support safe and effective patient management.
