Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to the working principles of patient monitoring and perfusion equipment. You will learn about essential biomedical electronics concepts and the role and application of these principles to the clinical environment. Attention will be on the monitoring of perfusion hardware and clinical parameters during cardiopulmonary bypass to ensure safe practice, in line with the ANZCP Standards and Guidelines. You will explore technical issues and develop problem-solving skills, while also creating mitigation strategies to de-risk complex and problematic clinical scenarios.

  1. 1

Examine the principles and safety standards of biomedical devices relevant to clinical perfusion to safely provide perfusion.

  2. 2

Analyse a variety of perfusion equipment and monitoring devices to justify the selection of appropriate technology for the clinical management patients.

  3. 3

Apply critical problem solving knowledge and skills to optimise patient hemodynamics in complex clinical practice settings.

  4. 4

Examine the technical issues expected from cardiac biomedical equipment to develop problem solving strategies for when equipment malfunctions.

  5. 5

Justify the use of safety devices in risk mitigation, as outlined in ANZCP Standards and Guidelines, during Cardiopulmonary Bypass.
