Workload and teaching

  • Tutorials18 hours
  • Lectures6 hours
  • Teaching approachEnquiry-based learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.

Usually, you can expect to engage with:

  • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and
  • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study

Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

*Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements

The unit is premised on a ‘flipped learning approach’ wherein you are encouraged to engage with the pre-recorded lectures and learning support materials (readings, video clips, etc) online (via Moodle) before attending tutorials. You should come to tutorials prepared to engage with one another and your tutors in active dialogue. The intention is to interrogate the key concepts and theories offered through learning materials and to actively explore their implications for teaching practice (and school policy/ies).  Whilst the “active learning” approach is adopted here; it is also noted that there are elements of case-based, problem-based and enquiry-based learning in this unit. You are also encouraged to reflect on your own experience of adolescence and how this informs your developing identity as a teacher.
