Synopsis
This unit prepares you to become effective and knowledgeable humanities and social science (HASS) teachers. You will learn to critically explore different approaches to teaching HASS in Years 7 to 10. The unit involves an examination of various strategies, resources, activities and forms of assessment for teaching different areas of the HASS curriculum, including civics and citizenship, history, geography, and economics. You will learn how to integrate the Cross-Curriculum priorities and General Capabilities into the teaching of the HASS, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia, Sustainability, Critical and Creative Thinking, and Intercultural Understanding. You will also critically examine relevant state and national curriculum documents. The unit will explore some of the challenges and complexities HASS teachers may encounter, such as the teaching of sensitive or controversial issues, and strategies for responding to these challenges.
