  • Minor in a social science area (e.g. anthropology, cultural studies, economics, environmental studies, geography, history, legal studies, philosophy, politics, sociology).

Overview

This unit prepares you to become effective and knowledgeable humanities and social science (HASS) teachers. You will learn to critically explore different approaches to teaching HASS in Years 7 to 12. The unit involves an examination of various strategies, resources, activities and forms of assessment for teaching different areas of the HASS curriculum, including civics and citizenship, history, geography, politics, international studies, sociology, intercultural understanding, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, studies of Asia, and sustainability, that are taught in diverse ways in schools. You will also critically examine relevant state and national curriculum documents.

    effectively plan and teach HASS lessons across different year levels and for students with diverse backgrounds and abilities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

    develop units of work that meet the requirements of curriculum for Years 7 to 10 and the post-compulsory Years 11 and 12

    understand and implement effective assessment programs for Years 7 to 12 HASS and for students with diverse backgrounds and abilities

    design HASS lessons that integrate information and communication technologies

  7. 7

    design HASS lessons that facilitate critical thinking, research, numeracy and literacy skills.
