Overview

This unit builds on the understanding developed in EDF5177 Humanities: Social sciences in secondary years A, to further prepare you to become effective and knowledgeable social science teachers. You will develop the ability to critically explore and use different approaches to teaching humanities and social science (HASS) in Years 7 to 12. The unit involves developing your capacity to use various planning strategies, resources, activities and forms of assessment for teaching different areas of the HASS curriculum including studies in the Victorian Certificate of Education. You will also critically examine Australian curriculum documents and explore examples of international research on HASS teaching and learning to prepare you to be a teacher in global contexts.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    identify, evaluate and use different resources for teaching HASS

    effectively plan and teach HASS lessons across different year levels and for students with diverse backgrounds and abilities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

    develop units of work that meet the requirements of curriculum documents for Years 7 to 10 and the post-compulsory Years 11 and 12, in either Australian or other global curriculum

  5. 5

    understand, design and implement effective assessment programs for Years 7 to 12 HASS and for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities

    effectively design HASS lessons that integrate information and communication technologies (ICT)

  7. 7

    design HASS lessons that facilitate critical thinking, research, numeracy and literacy skills.
