Overview

This unit will equip you with an understanding of contaminant fate and transport through the environment. A short review of the key chemistry-related to environmental contaminants will be included. You will then cover the principles of contaminant fate and transport and learn about contaminant fate and transport in air, water and soil. The opportunities for management, mitigation and remediation will also be discussed.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

evaluate the principles of contaminant fate and transport within soil, water and air systems

  2. 2

describe the fate and transport of different contaminants in soil, water and air

  3. 3

assess the potential environmental impacts of contaminants

  4. 4

construct a fate and transport model for environmental contaminants

  5. 5

communicate contaminant fate and transport principles and associated environmental impacts to inform management options.

Workload and teaching

  • Lectures12 hours
  • Practical activities24 hours
  • Teaching approachProblem-based learning
  • Teaching approachPeer assisted learning
  • Teaching approachEnquiry-based learning
  • Teaching approachCase-based teaching

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

Students will work with publicly available data sets to model the movement of contaminants through the environment.

Students will work in groups for in-semester assessment tasks and will also peer-review other teams submissions to enhance uptake of unit materials.

Lectures and practice classes will be delivered in a combination of pre-recorded topics and real-time sessions to give students more opportunities for enquiry and discussion with lecturers.

Case studies will be used to explain lecture content with a particular focus on case studies to explore contaminant fate and transport from various sources through different parts of the environment.
