Overview
Good object-oriented software design connects what a system needs to do with how its objects, responsibilities and interactions are structured in code. This unit develops your ability to design, implement and improve object-oriented software systems using clear modelling, disciplined programming practice and contemporary development tools.
You will learn to apply object-oriented design principles including abstraction, encapsulation, information hiding, inheritance and polymorphism, using standard modelling notations such as UML class and interaction diagrams. The unit focuses on translating requirements into object responsibilities, collaborations and maintainable implementations, while introducing only the data modelling needed to support persistence and object-relational mapping in software systems.
Through practical development activities, you will iteratively design, implement, test, debug and refactor object-oriented software. You will use integrated development environments, modelling tools, version control systems, object-relational mapping frameworks and artificial intelligence-enabled support to assist with design and implementation, while maintaining responsibility for understanding, validating and explaining the resulting software artefacts.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Interpret software requirements to identify object responsibilities, relationships, interactions and system behaviours needed for data storage and object-oriented software design and implementation;
- 2
Design and evaluate object-oriented models using appropriate principles and notations, including abstraction, encapsulation, information hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, UML class diagrams and UML interaction diagrams;
- 3
Implement maintainable object-oriented software systems from design models using object-oriented programming constructs, testing, debugging, refactoring and appropriate persistence mechanisms;
- 4
Use software engineering tools and methods, including integrated development environments, modelling tools, version control, object-relational mapping frameworks and artificial intelligence-enabled support, to manage iterative object-oriented development activities;
- 5
Communicate object-oriented design and implementation decisions using appropriate technical terminology, modelling artefacts, documentation and version-controlled project evidence.
