Overview

This unit focuses on primary care nursing practice in relation to working with health care organisations, individuals, families, groups and communities, including Indigenous Australians. This unit builds upon content delivered in NUR1013. Learning objectives support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Curriculum Framework have been utilised in the design of the unit.  Students analyse the key philosophies and frameworks that guide the delivery of primary healthcare. Students examine the health of populations, families and individuals as they relate to health priorities, disease prevention, and continuity of care. This unit introduces the student to the concepts of health and illness as they relate to health indicators for vulnerable groups, and local and global healthcare. The influence of the social determinants of health are explored as they affect the health and personal wellbeing of individuals, development of therapeutic relationships and culturally competent nursing practice. This will provide a foundation for students to explore and reflect on the provision of health care to vulnerable populations and nursing in a culturally diverse community.
