Prerequisite: NUR5002 and NUR1013 and NUR5033

Overview

This unit focuses on primary care nursing practice in relation to working with health care organisations, individuals, families, groups and communities, including Indigenous Australians. This unit builds upon content delivered in NUR1013. Learning objectives support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Curriculum Framework have been utilised in the design of the unit.  Students analyse the key philosophies and frameworks that guide the delivery of primary healthcare. Students examine the health of populations, families and individuals as they relate to health priorities, disease prevention, and continuity of care. This unit introduces the student to the concepts of health and illness as they relate to health indicators for vulnerable groups, and local and global healthcare. The influence of the social determinants of health are explored as they affect the health and personal wellbeing of individuals, development of therapeutic relationships and culturally competent nursing practice. This will provide a foundation for students to explore and reflect on the provision of health care to vulnerable populations and nursing in a culturally diverse community.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Critically analyse the meaning of health and the broad principles of public health such as equity, community engagement and partnerships to undertake a health needs assessment.

    Analyse the key philosophies and frameworks of primary healthcare and health promotion.

  3. 3

    Identify population health indicators particularly as they relate to vulnerable groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

    Recognise the role of health literacy and behaviour change in improving health outcomes for diverse population groups.

  5. 5

    Describe the social determinants of health including environmental determinants and the impact of climate change on primary and global health.

  6. 6

    Critically evaluate the impact of cultural diversity on health and illness behaviour and develop strategies to incorporate the issues of cultural safety and cultural competence within nursing practice.

    Recognise the elements of therapeutic communication with particular reference to working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and age groups.

    Incorporate the issues of cultural safety and cultural competence by reflecting on personally held values, beliefs and cultural orientation related to cultural sensitivity.

    Determine barriers associated with access to, and equity in health care particularly as they relate to Indigenous Australians and people in different vulnerable groups.

    Identify the characteristics of a culturally competent health care workforce and health care system.
