Overview
Perioperative nursing requires specialised skills and understanding of pathophysiology, interdisciplinary teamwork, perioperative and peri-anaesthetic nursing management and care. This unit provides foundational knowledge of perioperative and peri-anaesthetic nursing roles. You will develop skills to effectively, assess and appropriately manage elective and emergency surgical situations. This unit of study will assist you to implement evidence-based person-centred care, engage in risk reduction and support outcome optimisation through patients’ entire surgical journeys. The unit will support this related to the core roles of anaesthetic nurse, instrument circulating nurse, and recovery room nurse. You will learn how to analyse complex perioperative situations from clinical, legal and ethical perspectives. You will be introduced to new and emerging technologies in the perioperative setting.

Workload and teaching

A total of 24 hours teaching-directed and student directed study/week. Teacher directed study includes online learning activities and tutorials in flexible delivery (on-campus or on-line). Tutorials will involve 7 x 8 hour sessions during the semester. Must be working at least 0.6 FTE in a perioperative setting.
