Overview
This unit builds upon the foundations established in the unit NUR5923 in relation to the assessment and management of patients with complex disease processes. You will extend your skills, expertise and knowledge, learn to manage complex critically ill patients presenting with multiple organ dysfunctions and measure the efficacy of advanced intensive care therapies and interventions.
This unit also examines unique psychosocial and ethical factors that may impact the intensive care nurse's complex decision making, and family and patient centred care in end of life care and organ donation situations. You will develop skills to provide an advanced level of care to intensive care patients and their families across age, socio-cultural and economic groups. At the same time you will be encouraged to explore the characteristics of high performing teams in ICU and role model leadership attributes in your workplace.

Implement a structured and holistic assessment of a complex intensive care patient with multiple organ dysfunction, by applying an appropriate assessment framework and critical evaluation of the findings to inform your assessment

Identify, prioritise and implement age-appropriate, culturally relevant therapeutic interventions for patients experiencing complex disease or injury states

Adapt and apply the core principles of intensive care nursing to specialist patient populations (e.g. patient with multiple trauma, burns, paediatrics, pregnancy).

Critically evaluate the continued development of intensive care therapies, analysing contemporary nursing issues, while identifying areas for future research, development, quality improvement and policy.

Explore socio-cultural, legal and ethical issues associated with the provision of intensive care to patients and their families – such as the provision of end of life care and organ donation in the ICU.
