Overview

This unit is a placement experience that will support your progression and fulfilment of entry level competencies in individual case management and foodservice management. You will be placed in health care contexts and develop skills in nutrition assessment, planning, management and monitoring of individuals, and exploring and improving food, food service and eating environments at the systems level. This unit will allow you to develop the skills required for nutrition and dietetic practice at the individual and systems level across a range of institutional care settings.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Apply specialised knowledge of science, nutrition, diet and disease into assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation of individual cases in a healthcare environment including the provision of safe, high quality, nutritious and sustainable food.

  2. 2

    Integrate personal, social, clinical, cultural, dietary, economic, environmental, ethical, medical and physiological factors into clinical reasoning and decision making in individual dietetics case management in the healthcare environment.

  3. 3

    Demonstrate person-centred dietetics care across a range of cases which includes the ability to formulate, implement and evaluate effective individual case management including prioritising care, working with the inter-professional healthcare team and discharge planning.

  4. 4

    Apply an evidence-based approach to support individual case management and critically evaluate effectiveness of intervention compared to best practice in dietetics.

  5. 5

    Explore, evaluate and propose solutions to systems-level challenges in food service settings and food systems to support both individual case management and organisational goals of operation.

  6. 6

    Exhibit oral and written communication skills and conflict resolution skills in professional interactions with nutrition and dietetics peers, colleagues, patients/clients and other stakeholders in the healthcare and academic environment.

    Demonstrate person-centred counselling skills to negotiate and facilitate nutrition, behaviour and lifestyle change and empower clients with self-management skills.

    Deliver effective counselling and education skills to support dietetic case management to the patients/client/family/carer and healthcare team.

    Utilise a collaborative care approach by working effectively as a member of the dietetic and broader healthcare team to demonstrate mastery of person-centred dietetic practice.

    Evaluate professional practice and make plans for continuing learning and development.

Students will spend the majority of time for this unit allocated to a healthcare setting (8 Weeks of either 4 or 5 days per week - a total of 36 days). Students will also be expected to attend tutorials and presentations in the academic setting (scheduled around placement commitments) with the remaining time allocated for private study. Students are expected to attend placement for the equivalent of full time hours during their scheduled placement weeks. It is also expected that students undertake private study outside of placement hours. Placements may extend into non standard university semester time.
