Requisites

Overview

This unit introduces you to the practice of nutrition and dietetics. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of the dietitian in utilising nutrition in the prevention and management of disease across the continuum of care and a range of communication strategies. The unit will also provide significant opportunities for you to investigate and develop personal and professional identities and will extend your ability to reflect on skills required for professional practice.  An introductory placement in a health care setting will allow you to develop understanding of the roles of the dietitian within the healthcare system, practise core dietetic skills and work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Examine personal and professional identity and professionalism for dietetic practice and integrate these into personal and professional learning.

    Describe dietetic practice across the continuum of care, from individuals to populations, and the role of the dietitian in the inter-professional teams.

  3. 3

    Employ core dietetic practice skills, including data collection and interpretation, assessment, communication and intervention strategies to formulate, implement and evaluate effective person-centred nutrition care for the treatment and prevention of disease.

    Apply knowledge and experience in a healthcare setting to practicing safely and professionally, as part of an inter-professional team.

    Integrate comprehensive and practical knowledge of food diversity and food composition into dietetic practice.

  6. 6

    Incorporate nutrition counselling theory and utilise a range of communication strategies in developing practical, relevant and targeted nutrition conversations and interventions for diverse audiences.

    Utilise critical reflection and reflexivity, effective professional and personal communication skills and teamwork to illustrate problem solving.

    Synthesise and communicate evidence-based findings and translate these into dietetic professional practice.

3 days (x 8 hours per day) over 9 weeks - a combination of pre-class lectures and reading, in class face to face workshops, some post class activities and simulated (applied) learning experiences. Students will also be expected to undertake self-directed study related to the unit content and complete assessment tasks as defined.  A fieldwork placement is in addition to this, as well as a 2 hour workshop on campus on the Friday during the three placement weeks.
