Requisites

Overview

This unit introduces you to an advanced level of knowledge, understanding and skill related to the intensive care management of patients with respiratory conditions.

Specific topics include: respiratory anatomy and physiology, common respiratory diseases and related pathologies, the advanced respiratory assessment, diagnosis and management of respiratory emergencies including specific pharmacotherapeutic interventions.

You must be actively engaged in appropriate clinical practice, clinical placements or clinical simulation to achieve the outcomes of this unit.

It is expected that you will gain an advanced authority to practice after demonstrating the requisite clinical knowledge, skills and training of this unit as per the local statutory guidelines after completing an internship at the end of your course.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Analyse the epidemiology of respiratory disease and construct a natural history of the pathology related to acute and chronic respiratory conditions;

  2. 2

    Formulate appropriate pharmacotherapeutic regimes using the relevant medications available for the intensive care management of respiratory conditions;

  3. 3

    Integrate knowledge, skills and evidence based practice to professionally manage respiratory and airway emergencies at an intensive care level;

  4. 4

    Construct treatment pathways through the application of advanced clinical reasoning;

  5. 5

    Examine the risks and benefits to patients associated with the out-of-hospital intensive care management of respiratory conditions;

  6. 6

    Demonstrate advanced airway management skills including drug facilitated intubation.

You will be expected to complete at least 6 hours of distance education directed learning and a minimum of 6 hours of private study and self-directed learning per week. If completed on-campus, you will be expected to complete the equivalent of 6 hours of lectures, seminars or online tutorials per week in addition to 6 hours of self-directed learning.
