Overview

This unit introduces you to an advanced level of knowledge, understanding and skill related to the intensive care management of patients with respiratory conditions and airway emergencies.

Specific topics include: respiratory anatomy and physiology, advanced respiratory assessment, common respiratory diseases and related pathologies, management of critical respiratory emergencies, airway management on a paradigm from fundamental assessment and skills through to advanced techniques, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, pharmacotherapeutic interventions specific to airway and respiratory emergencies and clinical thinking in these settings.

You must be actively engaged in appropriate clinical practice, clinical placements or clinical simulation to achieve the outcomes of this unit.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Differentiate the connection between respiratory anatomy and physiology and link these to performing effective differential diagnosis of airway and respiratory emergencies.

    Evaluate available evidence related to airway and respiratory emergencies to determine current best practice approaches to managing airway and respiratory emergencies from the critical care paramedic perspective.

    Utilise clinical judgement to construct safe and effective treatment pathways with flexibility to manage a diverse range of critically unwell patients and disease progressions.

  4. 4

    Examine the practical application of fundamental and advanced airway management skills appropriate to the critical care paramedic setting.

  5. 5

    Formulate appropriate pharmacotherapeutic regimes for airway and respiratory conditions in the critical care paramedic setting.

    Critically analyse the role and effect of human factors in the management of airway and respiratory emergencies.
