Overview

In this unit you will undertake a science based internship of three full-time weeks (or part-time equivalent hours), where you will put into practice the knowledge and skills developed in your course. The internship experience will give you hands-on, real world exposure to the workplace environment and will supplement your academic growth to develop your graduate attributes and employability skills. You will work with a host supervisor to establish professional objectives, a project plan, and to receive feedback on your progress. The internship will help you develop self-awareness of your ability to meet stated objectives and areas in need of improvement.

A pre-placement workshop run by the Industry Engagement team will support your preparation for the placement and develop an understanding of science-based professions, the work culture, and the skills and attributes required for the workplace. Bespoke workshops during your internship will enhance your personal and professional brand.

You have two options to source your internship. With the approval of the Unit Coordinator and the Industry Engagement team, you can source your own internship host. Alternatively, you can apply for a Monash Sourced placement, which is via a competitive process.

*Note: Internships for students enrolled in the Winter semester are self-sourced only

You will join the workforce for three full-time weeks (or part-time equivalent hours) in a professional setting that matches your degree in order to learn employability skills and better understand the workplace. This learning then feeds back into your selection of units and your future career path.

In the unit, you are expected to complete various assessment tasks. This includes an internship plan, an interview with a professional and an oral presentation.

Reflection on professional challenges and personal and professional development is important in the unit. This aims to establish a habit of life-long learning and a growth mindset; these are important in the rapidly changing work environment.

All assessment information is available on the Moodle page and in Slack. You will set your own due dates based upon the timing, duration and nature of your own individual placement. Staff will monitor assessment based on the dates you set. This self-elected process enables flexibility and recognises the variety of different placements being undertaken in terms of start dates and duration. You will need to nominate your due dates within two weeks of gaining access to the SCI3920 Moodle page.
