Overview

NOTE: This specialisation has had one or more changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2019. For details of changes, please consult the 2020 Change register.

Materials engineering is all about making new materials and improving existing ones - making things stronger, lighter, more functional, sustainable and cost-effective. You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience relating to traditional and emerging materials across a range of classes including metals, ceramics and polymers. This will involve characterisation, analysis and creation of materials with regard to their structural, functional, chemical/biological and other important properties. The course will consider such materials and processes in the context of the sustainability of the materials life-cycle, with particular focus on materials design and professional skills.

Structure

Parts C and D. Materials engineering knowledge, application and professional practice108 credit points
Part E. Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points

Studying the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) single degree

36 credit points
Electives must be completed at the unit level required to satisfy the course requirements. You must complete a total of 36 credit points of engineering elective study. 12 credit points must be at levels 2 or 3 and 24 credit points must be at levels 3 and 4 or 5 from the engineering technical electives list below. If you have completed two electives in Year 1 in a non-engineering minor in a discipline from another faculty that is approved by the Faculty of Engineering, you may want to use the 12 credit points at level 2 to complete the non-engineering minor, or choose from the materials engineering technical electives list. You are encouraged to take up the opportunity to pursue a minor in an engineering discipline that complements your engineering specialisation.

Materials engineering technical electives

36 credit points
You may consider other engineering technical units chosen from the engineering minors, subject to meeting the unit prerequisite or co-requisite rules. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.

Studying a double degree

The 36 credit points of specialisation engineering technical electives normally required in the single degree have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore not a requirement in the double degree courses.

Notes

You must satisfy the continuous professional development required to complete the course. See ENG0001.
