Overview

NOTE: This specialisation has had one or more changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2019. For details of changes, please consult the 2020 Change register.

Robotics and mechatronics engineering combines mechanical engineering, computing and electronics to create functional smart products. You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience in electrical systems; mechanics; systems engineering; sensors and artificial perception; thermo-fluids and power systems; analogue electronics; robotics; control systems; and manufacturing.

Structure

Parts C and D. Robotics and mechatronics engineering knowledge, application and professional practice108 credit points
You must complete the following core robotics and mechatronics engineering units and the units in either the artificial intelligence stream or automation stream.
NOTE: If you completed either core units ECE2071 or ECE2072 as a First Year technical elective, you must replace the core with another unit at the same level or higher from the robotics and mechatronics engineering technical electives list.
Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points

Studying the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) single degree

36 credit points
Electives must be completed at the unit level required to satisfy the course requirements. You must complete a total of 36 credit points of engineering elective study. 12 credit points must be at levels 2 or 3 and 24 credit points must be at levels 3 and 4 or 5 from the engineering technical electives list below. If you have completed two electives in Year 1 in a non-engineering minor in a discipline from another faculty that is approved by the Faculty of Engineering, you may want to use the 12 credit points at level 2 to complete the non-engineering minor, or choose from the robotics and mechatronics engineering technical electives list. If you are studying the course at the Clayton campus in Australia, you are encouraged to take up the opportunity to pursue a minor in an engineering discipline that complements your engineering specialisation.

Clayton offerings

36 credit points
You may consider other engineering technical units chosen from the engineering minors, subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.

Malaysia offerings

36 credit points
You may consider other engineering technical units at the required unit level with approval from the School of Engineering and subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. NOTE: Please refer to the information below for specific units that are required for the local professional accreditation in Malaysia. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.

Studying in Malaysia - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

12 credit points
You must complete ECE3051 and TRC4802 to satisfy the requirements of the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia (EAC) for accreditation in Malaysia.

Studying a double degree

The 36 credit points of specialisation engineering technical electives normally required in the single degree have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore not a requirement in the double degree courses.

Notes

You must satisfy the continuous professional development or industrial training required to complete the course. See ENG0001 (for Clayton) or ENG0002 (for Malaysia).
