Software engineering comprises the core principles consistent in software construction and maintenance: fundamental software processes and life-cycles; mathematical foundations of software engineering; requirements analysis; software engineering methodologies and standard notations; principles of software architecture and re-use; software quality frameworks and validation; software development; and maintenance environments and tools. Current industry-strength programming languages, technologies and systems feature highly in the practical components, electives and projects of the course.

Parts C and D. Software engineering knowledge, application and professional practice108 credit points
You must complete the following software engineering units AND one unit at level 4 or level 5 from the software engineering technical electives list.
Note 1: If you have been selected for the Faculty of Information Technology Industry-based Learning (IBL) placement program, please refer to the IBL information below.
Note 2: If you completed MAT1830 or FIT2085 as a First Year technical elective, you must replace the core with another unit at the same level or higher from the software engineering technical electives list.

Industry-based learning (IBL) Placement Program

In Year 2, you may apply for selection into the Faculty of Information Technology's industry-based learning (IBL) placement program. FIT4042 is completed in Semester 2 of Year 3 in the standard progression map. If selected for the program, you enrol in FIT4042 which replaces FIT4002 and a 6-point software engineering technical elective.

Studying E3010 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Computer Science

6 credit points
You replace FIT2085 with an additional approved elective from Part E. Software engineering technical electives list.

Studying E3011 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Information Technology

6 credit points
You replace FIT3171 with an additional level 3 or 4 approved elective from Part E. Software engineering technical electives.
Part E. Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points
Electives must be completed at the unit level required to satisfy the course requirements. You must complete a total of 36 credit points of engineering technical elective study. 12 credit points must be at levels 2 or 3 and 24 credit points must be at levels 3 and 4 or 5 from the engineering technical electives list below. If you have completed two electives in Year 1 in a non-engineering minor in a discipline from another faculty that is approved by the Faculty of Engineering, you may want to use the 12 credit points at level 2 to complete the non-engineering minor, or choose from the software engineering technical electives list.

Studying in Clayton: You may consider other engineering technical units chosen from the engineering minors, subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. Studying in Malaysia: You may consider other engineering technical units with approval from the School of Engineering and subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules.
NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.
