Overview
The Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies is aimed at students with advanced bilingual proficiency and seeks to develop your skills in translation and interpreting from/to English and another language, and your awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation/interpreting practice and studies. The course offers two specialisations, focusing on:
- Translation (Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish)
- Interpreting and translation (Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish).
Note: Languages on offer in any one year may vary depending on student enrolments.
You will gain a foundation in theories of translation and interpreting and receive training in research in the field. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to conceptualise translation/interpreting studies as an academic discipline in its historical, cross-disciplinary and intercultural context.
Note: Online delivery is available to domestic students in the translation-only specialisation

The handbook's description of this structure
The course is structured in five parts: Part A. Foundation studies, Part B. Core studies, Part C. Applied studies, Part D. Professional practice studies, and Part E. Elective studies.
Part A. Foundation studies
The focus of these studies is the theory and practice of translation and interpreting, familiarising you with current research models and methodologies in translation studies.
Part B. Core studies
These studies draw on best practices within interpreting and translation fields, providing intensive language-specific practice in written and oral transfer skills at a level required for certification by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). In addition to the relevant theoretical frameworks, the core units will also provide you with the discourse analysis, ethical and professional frameworks that are essential for professional interpreting and translation practice.
Part C. Applied studies
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development or a research pathway. Students in the interpreting and translation specialisation will also develop advanced skills in specialised fields of interpreting.
Part D. Professional practice studies
Designed in association with industry experts, select from this suite of professional enhancement offerings to build essential competencies for your career pathway.
Part E. Elective studies
Select from a range of options designed to enhance specific knowledge and skills in interpreting and translation and related fields, including a suite of professional enhancement offerings to build essential competencies for your career pathway.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course.
Translation (Clayton)
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C, Part. D and Part E.
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 84 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C, Part D (6 credit points) and Part E (24 credit points).
Interpreting and translation (Clayton)
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C, Part. D and Part E.
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 84 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B and Part. C and Part D (6 credit points).
Interpreting and translation (SEU)
- If you are at Southeast University, China you are admitted at entry level 1 and complete 96 credit points, comprising of Part A (12 credit points) and Part B (36 credit points). You will receive block credit for master's-level study at Southeast University (48 credit points) towards the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies.

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Professional accreditation
This course is endorsed by NAATI for the following certification levels: Certified Translator, Certified Advanced Translator, Certified Provisional Interpreter, Certified Interpreter, Certified Specialist Health Interpreter, Certified Specialist Legal Interpreter, Certified Conference Interpreter.
On completion of the required units of the degree, students are therefore eligible to directly sit the NAATI certification tests for any of these levels.

Work Integrated Learning
The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component is embedded into the academic program and also included in the professional internship. WIL is aimed at helping you gain real world experiences in the Translation and Interpreting (T&I) industry. By working with professionals in the industry and/or alongside professionals who frequently use interpreters and translators, you will develop useful skills and a better understanding of ways in which theory relates to practice. Employers participating in the WIL may also become a useful recruitment resource for graduates of the program.
