Overview

The Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies is aimed at students with advanced bilingual proficiency and seeks to develop your skills in translation and interpreting from/to English and another language, and your awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation/interpreting practice and studies. The course offers two specialisations, focusing on:

  • Translation (Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish)
  • Interpreting and translation (Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish).

Note: Languages on offer in any one year may vary depending on student enrolments.

You will gain a foundation in theories of translation and interpreting and receive training in research in the field. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to conceptualise translation/interpreting studies as an academic discipline in its historical, cross-disciplinary and intercultural context.

Note: Flexible delivery is available to domestic students in the translation-only specialisation. This means that classes can be taken remotely with optional on-campus activities.

Translation (Clayton)96 credit points

Part A. Foundation study (12 credit points)

You must complete the following units (12 credit points).

Note: Students enrolled in the translation specialisation must enrol in APG5875 and APG5601 concurrently. Part-time students undertake only APG5875 and APG5611 in their first semester of study.

Part D. Specialist study (30-36 credit points)

You must complete 30 credit points from the list below or any of the units listed in Part. C.

If you completed one Professional enhancement unit (6 credit points) in Part C then you must complete 36 credit points.

Note: Entry point 2 is only required to complete 24 credit points.

Complementary electives

In part D, you may take up to 12 credit points of units from other Arts Graduate coursework programs subject to meeting individual unit prerequisites. These units must be selected from the Principal study and/or Specialist study sections.
Interpreting and translation (Clayton and SEU)96 credit points

Note 2: Interpreting specialisation units are taught at Caulfield campus.

Part A. Foundation study (24 credit points)

Note: Students enrolled in the combined interpreting and translation specialisation must complete APG5875 prior to enrolling in APG5603 or APG5601.

Part D. Specialist study - Clayton (6-12 credit points)

You must complete 6 credit points from the list below or any of the units listed in Part. C. If you completed one Professional enhancement unit (6 credit points) in Part C then you must complete 12 credit points.

Part D. Specialist study - SEU (12 credit points)

The course is structured in four parts: Part A. Foundation study, Part B. Principal study, Part C. Applied study, and Part D. Specialist study.

Part A. Foundation study

The focus of these studies is the theory and practice of translation and interpreting, familiarising you with current research models and methodologies in translation studies.

Part B. Principal study

These studies draw on best practices within interpreting and translation fields, providing intensive language-specific practice in written and oral transfer skills at a level required for certification by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). In addition to the relevant theoretical frameworks, the core units will also provide you with the discourse analysis, ethical and professional frameworks that are essential for professional interpreting and translation practice.

Part C. Applied study

The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development or a research pathway. Students in the interpreting and translation specialisation will also develop advanced skills in specialised fields of interpreting.

Part D. Specialist study

Select from a range of options designed to enhance specific knowledge and skills in interpreting and translation and related fields, including a suite of professional enhancement offerings to build essential competencies for your career pathway. 

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

Translation (Clayton)

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C and Part. D.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 84 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C (18 credit points) and Part D (24 credit points)

Interpreting and translation (Clayton)

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B, Part. C and Part. D.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 84 credit points, comprising Part. A, Part. B and Part. C (18 credit points).

Interpreting and translation (SEU)

  • If you are at Southeast University, China you are admitted at entry level 1 and complete 96 credit points, comprising block credit for master's-level study at Southeast University (48 credit points) and Part. B (36 credit points) and Part. D (12 credit points).

Employers participating in the WIL may also become a useful recruitment resource for graduates of the program.

English language

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

This course is endorsed by NAATI for the following certification levels: Certified Translator, Certified Advanced Translator, Certified Interpreter, Certified Specialist Interpreter (Legal), Certified Specialist Interpreter (Health), Certified Conference Interpreter.

On completion of the required units of the degree, students are therefore eligible to directly sit the NAATI certification tests for any of these levels.
