Overview

The Master of Human Resource management is a forward focused and evidence-based engagement with HR’s role in the emerging environment characterised by change and uncertainty.  With a focus on ‘the future of work’ and ‘the future of HRM’ you will learn about current views regarding the changing nature of HRM brought about by changes to the organisational and employment context. In addition to addressing contemporary challenges such as COVID, the Master of HRM delves deeply into workforce analytics and employee wellbeing, development and capabilities.  The MHRM also provides students with opportunities to extend their professional development, broaden their knowledge with elective subjects, and apply their knowledge through industry projects.

You must complete the following unit, one or two industry placement units and one or two elective units.

You must complete either one or two elective units, depending on whether one or both industry project units listed above were chosen. Elective units to be chosen from the units offered across the Monash online programs as long as you have the prerequisite and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units.

This course is structured in three parts. Part A. Contemporary Application, Part B. Advanced Application Part C. Professional application 

Part A. Contemporary Application

These units provide coverage of theories, models and frameworks to apply to contemporary practice of human resource management.  They are designed to introduce foundational knowledge of key human resource management activities.  Employing critical analysis, reflection and  application to professional practice, each unit examines contemporary HRM practice and the challenges facing organisations and their workforce.

Part B. Advanced Application

The focus of these units is to deepen and extend understanding and practice of contemporary human resource management.  They are designed to provide advanced knowledge of complex human resource management  challenges and practical approaches to engage with them effectively.  Employing critical analysis, reflection and  application to professional practice, each unit examines advanced HRM practice and strategic opportunities facing organisations and their workforce.

Part C. Professional Application

The focus of these units provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge to their professional practice. The units feature professional development, application of HRM knowledge in practice and opportunities for students to direct their learning to thrive and maintain currency in an uncertain business environment.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course: 

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising of Part A, Part B and Part C
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points, comprising of Part B and Part C.

The course comprises 72 credit points structured into three parts: Part A: Contemporary Application (24 credit points), Part B: Advanced Application (24 credit points) Part C: Professional application (24 credit points)

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise indicated.

Part A. Contemporary Application (24 credit points) 

You must complete:

  • MGO5110 Sustainability and performance in human resource management
  • MGO5120 Ethics and legal issues in human resource management
  • MGO5130 Diversity and inclusion

Part B. Advanced Application (24 credit points)

You must complete:

  • MGO5200 Engagement and talent management 
  • PSY5018 Mental health and wellbeing in the workplace 
  • MGO5220 Workforce and employment analytics
  • PSY5017 Disability and inclusive practice

Part C. Professional Application (24 credit points)

You must complete:

  • MGO5992 Professional Development  

Industry Project

You must complete one or both of the following units:

  • LEO5113 Industry project 1
  • LEO5114 Industry project 2 

Elective units

You must complete:

  • either one or two elective units, depending on whether one or both industry project units listed above were chosen. Elective units to be chosen from the units offered across the Monash online programs as long as you have the prerequisite and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units.

Entry requirements

English language

Monash: Level A, that is: IELTS: 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or TOEFL Paper-based test: 550 with a TWE of 4.5; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
