Overview

As a registered psychologist, this course will prepare you to be eligible to commence a registrar program in educational and developmental psychology and to practise in a range of settings including primary and secondary schools, health and welfare services, hospitals, care facilities, clinics and private practice and within business and corporate environments. The course has been designed to further develop you as an evidence-based practitioner and independent professional who has the theoretical, research, assessment and therapeutic skills required for the practice of educational and developmental psychology. You will develop an advanced ability to think critically and analytically about the processes involved in educational and developmental psychology and the application of these to professional practice and research. This course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a sixth year in educational and developmental psychology (APAC Level 4).

The course is structured in two parts: Part A. Core studies and Part B. Clinical placement.

Part A. Core studies

These studies will advance your knowledge and skill development to practice in the field of educational and developmental psychology. Guided by sound ethical principles, and through collaborative participation in coursework through interactive workshops, you will develop both expert knowledge of educational and developmental psychology across the lifespan and your critical thinking skills for professional and evidence-based practice.

Part B. Clinical placement

These studies involve professional experience in educational and developmental settings, where you have the opportunity to apply theory to practice under the supervision of experienced practitioners, including those with an area of practice endorsement in educational and developmental psychology. Across the course, you will complete a minimum of 750 recorded hours of supervised professional experience.

Part A. Core studies (24 credit points)

  • EDF5570 Advanced clinical interventions for mental health
  • EDF5571 Advanced psychological assessment and diagnosis
  • EDF5726 Trauma-informed practice

Part B. Clinical placement (24 credit points)

You must complete the following units:

  • EDF5732 Clinical placement in psychology 1 (12 credit points)
  • EDF5733 Clinical placement in psychology 2 (12 credit points)

    apply advanced interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and professionally engage and collaborate with individuals, families, groups and systems, and with professionals in multidisciplinary contexts

    demonstrate affirming practice using a health equity and human rights framework with all individuals and families, recognising diversity and intersectional influences on wellbeing and development

    demonstrate knowledge of culturally responsive, health equity, and human rights principles for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, recognising the impacts of colonisation and the importance of decolonising practice.

Monash Level D, that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 7.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 65; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score 98 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 27, Listening: 24, Reading: 24 and Speaking: 23; or Equivalent approved English test

Professional accreditation

The Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology Advanced is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). It meets the requirements for APAC level 4 in psychology and is approved by the Psychology Board of Australia. Graduates qualify for membership with the Australian Educational and Developmental Psychology Association (AEDPA), and the Australian Psychological Society College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists (CEDP).

With a further two years of approved supervised practice in educational and developmental psychology, graduates are eligible for endorsement as educational and developmental psychologists with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).
