The handbook's description of this structure
The course is structured in four parts: Part A. Foundation studies, Part B. Core studies, and Part C. Discipline elective studies.
Part A. Foundation studies
In these studies, you will gain specialised professional knowledge in the core skills, knowledge, and disciplines of public health through the study of epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion and planning, and introduction and challenges in public health.
Part B. Core studies
In these studies, you will develop an understanding of knowledge and skills in the broad domain of public health through core studies in the public health discipline area of infections and chronic disease, research methods and clinical trials.
You will also apply skills and knowledge to public health delivery, clinical leadership and management and examine occupational health and safety and environmental influences on health.
Part C. Discipline elective studies
In these studies, you will have the opportunity to gain greater expertise in key areas of your interest through an elective study program to suit your own career interests. You will have the opportunity to choose between one of the following pathways: Coursework, Australia Exchange Programme, or Research.
In the research pathway you will work with a supervisor who will guide you in creating either a written research report of 8000 to 10000 words or a ready-for-submission article prepared for submission to a relevant, peer-reviewed academic publication.
Note: Part-time students must complete the coursework pathway.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 96 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B, and Part C.
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part B and Part C.
- Entry level 2 is available full-time only, part-time study is not available for this entry level.
- If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and commence the level 1 (96 credit point) option.Â
