Overview

This unit provides a contemporary, global and sociocultural evaluation of public relations theory, research and practice. Students critically engage with the challenges of communication management in different cultural contexts and analyse the complex role and impact of public relations in society. Topics include the rise of promotional culture, professional ethics as well as issues of diversity and inclusion across diverse industry sectors. National, transnational and postcolonial perspectives are explored to better understand the practice of public relations in different countries and regions.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit includes case-based teaching, where students apply their knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to solve complex contextual scenarios. Activities are often designed so that there is not one clear answer, but students need to work together to examine, analyse and make decisions to resolve the situation.

This unit is taught intensively in block-mode across six weeks from Weeks 1 to 6 of Semester 2. It adopts a blended learning format, combining short videos, reading and other learning activities in order to promote active, self-directed engagement at the postgraduate level. Students are expected to actively participate in the unit and complete all the learning activities.
